Ars Technica: First Look: Microsoft Office for Mac 2008

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/apps/mac-office-2008-review.ars
"The subject of Microsoft Office for Mac has the potential to be a touchy one with Apple fans. There is a contingent of Mac users for whom Microsoft is the enemy, and any alternative to their products is the right choice. For many others though, especially those of us who live and work in cross-platform environments, the reality is that Microsoft's Office suite is the de facto

standard, and life is a lot easier if everyone's files play nice.

Regardless of where you stand on the Office versus iWork question, there's no denying that Redmond has has churned out some pretty impressive and very Mac-like software. Office 98 was a fine package, and Internet Explorer 5 gave the Mac a better browser at the time than was available for Windows. Office 2001 introduced some new features, and then Office v.X brought the productivity suite to the shiny happy land of OS X. Bugs were ironed out for Office 2004, and that's where we've been ever since.

Office 2004 wasn't bad per se, but the switch to Intel has been painful for Office users. The applications were not universal binaries, which meant they had to run in under emulation in Rosetta. All that has changed, however, with the release of Microsoft Office for Mac 2008."

Four Ways to Improve Productivity on Your Mac

http://caitlynimburgo.wordpress.com/2007/06/23/four-ways-to-improve-productivity-on-your-mac/
"A Macintosh is a powerful machine. It can do countless things. Anything from allowing you to type a simple report for your class to creating priceless family DVDs to being a server for files soon to be streamed to another electronic device. With all these things we can use our computers for, we often times get distracted by one thing or another, even if it’s just a chirp we hear as Twitterrific goes off. But without productivity on your Mac, you can never achieve the great things we want to with our machines. These four steps will hopefully increase your productivity and inspire you to get your work done in a more timely manner."

5THIRTYONE: Controlling multiple Macs, locally and remotely

http://5thirtyone.com/archives/825
"For anyone who owns more than one Apple computer, the thought of controlling two or more machines at the same time is surely something many people think of. Despite any previous assumptions you may have had, the steps necessary to control two or more Apple computers [at the same time] is quite simple and easily completed by anyone willing and able to follow a few simple directions. The challenge now is not a question of "How could I possibly setup and control multiple machines - for free?" Rather, the challenge is deciding whether or not you need 1) simple "local" control (main desktop + a secondary computer on the same desk), 2) remote access (control your desktop from the cafe or office), or 3) both. We’ll look at setting-up both local and remote access using two methods - both utilizing free - and secure (if applicable) - software."

imafish: 52 Ways to Speed Up OS X

http://www.imafish.co.uk/articles/post/articles/130/52-ways-to-speed-up-os-x/
"After Apple recently announced a delay to OS X 10.5 Leopard I had to delay my iMac upgrade until the Autumn. This led me to thinking about how to speed up Tiger to get the most out of my ageing G5.

This is what I came up with:

General System

1. Repair Disk Permissions
Navigate to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select your Macintosh HD and select Verify Disk Permissions. If needed you can then Repair Disk Permissions.

2. Clear out login items
Its good to check that unwanted programs are not starting up when you login to your Mac. This can be done from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items."

Quicksilver tutorial and screencast roundup

http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/05/10/quicksilver-tutorial-and-screencast-roundup/
"I can’t even begin to describe how wonderful Quicksilver really is. Nor can I adequately describe exactly what it is. But I will say this - if you own a Mac - download and install Quicksilver right now, then start watching a few of these screencasts and/or read a few of the tutorials. It won’t take long for you to wonder how you survived without it."

43 Folders: Nocturne: Free “night vision” app from the maker of Quicksilver

http://www.43folders.com/2007/05/09/nocturne/
"Fans of working in troglodyte mode should have a look at A1c0r’s latest creation, Nocturne, an application that generates a “night vision mode” for your Mac — similar to looking at a negative of a photo.

For years, you’ve been able to do something similar by hitting “ctrl-opt-cmd-8,” which invokes “Switch to black-on-white” in Universal Access options (go ahead and try it, then hit it again to return to normal)."

My Dream App: Next Generation: A UI update on the Cookbook software

http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1713
"

Hey everyone! Cookbook has been progressing from behind closed doors for the last few months and we have some absolutely delicious material for you to check out. Before we get to that, though, we'd like to officially announce that Wolfgang Bartelme, the creator of the TextMate and iSnip icons, has been working closely with us on the application's design and user experience. In case you're wondering (and you're probably not) iSnip was actually a project that I was involved in before AppZapper and it was a freeware semi-competitor to John's iClip.

It's worth noting that we have made same pretty drastic strides since the initial mockups by Michael. As you know from the last post, we're going with a 3 column interface that will promote visual browsing. Likewise, the theme of the recipe view will actually change based on the kind of recipe you're viewing. We've expanded this thinking to include a unique style for the app itself... which we feel encompasses a kitchen atmosphere very nicely while still proving to be neutral enough for the themed recipe view to not look out of place."

Mac OS X Browsers Benchmarked

http://macintalk.com/2007/03/31/mac-os-x-browsers-benchmarked/
"Mac users have more browsers to choose from then any other platform. The question is, which one delivers the most performance? Last year we tested four of the most popular browsers and found that OmniWeb (which uses a tweaked version of Apple’s WebCore engine) and the WebKit nightly build more or less tied on the test suite."

Pixelbreaker: Blog and Flash work

http://blog.pixelbreaker.com/
AWESOME Flash/design work/blog, in particular, the new "Polar Clock Screensaver" is fantastic.
"

These days, I’m predominantly an ActionScript developer, but I also work in JavaScript / AJAX, PHP and am tinkering with Ruby and other technologies in an effort to keep atop new technologies.

I recently left de-construct after being head of the Flash development team there for three years. Prior to that I was at Tonic for a couple of years, again as a Flash developer. My career in web started way back in 1997 at deepend design, where I was a Web developer for 3 years, and worked on very early dHTML sites and also worked with Perl/PHP etc.

I am now freelancing and working on a broad range of flash projects, I’ve worked on fully-fledged applications, games, microsites, and global multi-lingual brand and campaign sites.

My personal projects at present include porting my existing libraries to the new ActionScript 3.0 model, and a lightweight, but very detailed debugging tool for AS3 applications."

This week's Top 10 highlights our favorite free Mac software, available right now for your installation pleasure.
